Edward Trencom's Nose

We bought this book from Borders last week at half-price. It sounded funny and interesting - about a man, his family history, and a love affair with cheese.

So I spent a whole day reading and finished it! Such a shiok feeling.

Anyway Edward Trencom's Nose by Giles Milton was an ok, and mildly entertaining read. Not quite the ha-ha funny type of comedic book as it was supposed to be. And I kind of guessed the ending halfway through the book. There were just so many clues! And the only thing that keeps it going is that the truth is just withheld to the end. For example Edward will be told by someone who knows the whole truth about the mystery of his nose that "I can't tell you now because your life is in danger", or "I can't tell you now, the timing is not right"... Ya, so its a little bit 'irritating' in that the story hinges on a truth that exists from the beginning, just that it is not revealed. It doesn't give the reader the pleasure of a developing story with new truths uncovered along the way. It doesn't keep you in suspense because of a curiosity to find out what development is going to happen next, but rather you keep reading because you just wanna know what that mysterious character was going to say all along!!

And the cheese element kind of dissipated towards the end. After a while, the cheese was kind of just a backdrop, not as integral to the storyline as you are made to think.

But anyway, couldn't resist eating cheese while reading the book haha! So had a nice helping of yummy stilton (a lovely smelly english cheese that I discovered during the roadtrip to Cornwall) :) mmm...cheeeese *wave hands in the Wallace way*
